Centre for Sustainable Development Initiatives

Working Towards Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa

About CSDI

Welcome to the website of the Centre for Sustainable Development Initiatives (CSDI). The CSDI is a local Non-Ggovernmental Organisation registered with the Government of Kenya (vide registration certificate number OP 218/051/2008/022/5073 issued by the Non Governmental Organisation Coordination Board, Government of the Republic of Kenya). We seek to provide solutions to problems bedevilling the natural resource base of the drylands of Kenya through the application of appropriate technologies.

The CSDI works in the drylands of Kenya, and other challenging environments. CSDI  continues to play a critical role in the work towards the alleviation of rural poverty, work that is anchored on sound science and best practices/experiental learning.  We are the premier organisation that has been working to combat the spread of invasive alien species in the arid and semiarid lands of Kenya; we do this through collaboration with partners in the government (primarily the Arid Lands Resource Management Project under the Prime Minister's Office, and the Kenya Forestry Research Institute, especially the Forest Products Research Centre at Karura).

CSDI places emphasis on the application of sound scientific approaches and best-bet experiential practices as the core philosophy guiding its intervention measures. The organization makes every effort to ensure that any programmatic activity offers opportunities for the marginalized communities in the drylands of Kenya to break away from the vicious cycle of poverty by first freeing themselves from the poverty of ideas and information.

CSDI’s Key Intervention Sectors

The CSDI works across three main thematic sectors:

-      Water, in which we seek to address the issues related to supply infrastructure, water storage and conservation, integrated resource management, sanitation facilities and awareness;

 -     Livelihoods and directly related sectors such as invasive species management (with primary focus on the most important weeds such as striga and Prosopis juliflora), agriculture (soil health, improved inputs, extension/credit services, storage and marketing, nutrition, links to forestry issues) and pastoralism (land/water access, animal husbandry/veterinary services, cooperatives/marketing);

 -    Health, including neonatal care, childhood immunization, emergency obstetric care, antenatal care, epidemic awareness, malaria prevention/insecticide treated bed-nets.
